Custom Metal Housing for NTC Temperature Probes

Heatecx manufactures custom metal housings for NTC probe manufacturers, sensor assemblers and equipment makers. The housing may be produced in copper, aluminium, stainless steel or another approved alloy. Material choice depends on the application medium, temperature, corrosion exposure, mechanical load, thermal transfer requirement and joining method.
The internal diameter must match the thermistor, insulation, thermal filler, adhesive or sealing system used by the integrator. Internal clearance and metal mass influence response time. Wall thickness, surface condition and closure design influence mechanical durability and environmental resistance.

A metal housing for an NTC temperature probe is an independent metal component installed around an NTC thermistor to protect it during probe assembly and operation. The housing does not measure temperature and does not replace the thermistor. Its purpose is to provide mechanical protection and a repeatable mounting geometry for the sensing element that the customer or probe integrator installs inside it.

Depending on the drawing, the part may be cylindrical, stepped, threaded, flanged, open-ended or closed-ended. It may include a metal cap, collar, mounting neck or defined closure. When Heatecx supplies only this metal component, the accurate product terms are metal housing for NTC thermistor, metal sleeve for NTC sensor or NTC thermistor capsule. It should not be marketed as an NTC probe assembly unless the thermistor and other parts are included.

Independent NTC metal housings can be integrated into appliances, refrigeration systems, HVAC equipment, laboratory and medical equipment, EV battery modules, chargers, power supplies, automotive equipment and industrial temperature-control systems.

The same concept can be adapted for surface contact, insertion, immersion or installation inside a component. The application determines whether the housing needs a closed tip, thin wall, thread, flange, bracket, strain-relief interface, chemical resistance or a defined sealing method.

Deep drawing

Forms sheet metal into a hollow capsule using a punch and die. Suitable for cylindrical, repeat-production housings.

CNC turning

Machines bar or tube stock to create diameters, bores, shoulders, threads, chamfers and stepped profiles. Suitable for prototypes, short runs and tight tolerances.

Shielded-gas welding

Joins the body, cap or components with an arc protected by gas. Suitable for permanent joints and compound geometries.

Stamping and cold forming

Bends or compresses sheet metal at room temperature to make sleeves, caps, brackets and repeatable shapes.

Finishing operations

Includes cutting, sizing, deburring, polishing, brushing, passivation, cleaning and dimensional inspection.

A metal housing protects the NTC thermistor from impact, abrasion and handling during probe integration. It also helps maintain a repeatable sensor position and allows the outside shape to match the host equipment. Thermal response depends on the finished internal assembly, not on the housing material alone.

Stainless steel can provide corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Copper can support efficient heat transfer. Aluminium can reduce mass and suit specific forming requirements. The alloy must be selected against the medium, temperature, joining method and customer assembly process.

The housing should not automatically be described as IP67, IP68, high-temperature, food-grade or battery-qualified. Such claims require a defined finished assembly and appropriate validation.

Heatecx can review a custom NTC metal housing from a drawing, sample, dimensioned photograph or purchasing specification. The housing requirements should be listed separately from the electrical requirements of the NTC thermistor so the independent component is clearly defined.

The housing request should identify alloy, outside and inside diameter, length, wall thickness, tip shape, cap design, thread or mounting, tolerances, finish, closure method and annual quantity. If the customer will assemble the probe, provide thermistor diameter, insulation, filler, assembly temperature and allowable clearance.

FAQ

It is the independent metal part that protects and holds an NTC thermistor. It does not measure temperature by itself.
